Work Health Safety (WHS) Legislation summary

A nationally harmonised Work Health Safety (WHS) legislation is expected to replace existing OHS laws. Aged & Community Services SA & NT has prepared a summary for members of the proposed new legislation and suggestions on how to prepare for the imminent transition to the harmonised legislation.

ACS – Workforce Committee Managers Workload Survey

In July 2009, Aged and Community Services SA & NT Inc (ACS) conducted a survey with Managers of Residential Facilities and Managers of Community Programs to gain a better understanding of the perceived pressures of working in the aged and community care sector. Information provided by the respondents will be used to develop practical solutions to issues raised with the ultimate aim of supporting Managers and improving their retention within the sector.

135 people responded to the questionnaire (62% residential managers, 34% community managers). Unlike most surveys which receive minimal response and require a series of reminders and prompts, this survey resulted in 71 responses within the first 24 hours it was posted. The survey contained a number of open ended questions and respondents seized the opportunity to express their opinions candidly. Although the messages from this survey are not new, the strength of conviction behind them imply a crisis is looming and strategies must be developed to address the issues raised or the sector will lose skilled staff as well as repel new applicants.
