Aged care peak body calls for appropriate response to elder abuse

ACS acknowledges the significance of the recent elder abuse at Mitcham Residential Care Facility and condemns the improper actions of this staff member. Nevertheless, we want to reaffirm the critical importance, and excellent work, of staff in aged and community care generally. It remains of the upmost importance that the community continues to have confidence in the sector. The wider community needs to encourage people to undertake the highly valued and respected work offered in aged care.

With this in mind, we need to be very careful as a sector that any response to this incident does not cause unintended outcomes that may affect our workforce and their attraction to the sector and thereby not serve the needs of older people as they arise.
