ACS Members' Training Survey win a complimentary attendance at a training event

ACS has created a survey for members to provide feedback about training needs in 2009. Members' input is greatly appreciated to enable us to prioritise the training needs of the sector and offer the most relevant courses.

Review of conditional adjustment payment for residential aged care – final call for submissions

Residential aged care providers are urged to lodge formal submissions to the Review of the Conditional Adjustment Payment (CAP) in residential aged care.  Submissions close Friday 24 October 2008. Please click here for a proforma letter you can use to contribute to the CAP Review.

Information about the industry response to the CAP review was emailed to members in August. This document outlined key messages that will be used to argue the industry’s case to maintain the CAP in the short term and ensure Government action on viability issues in the longer term. Dementia Education Writer opportunities

The SA & NT Dementia Training Study Centre (SA & NT DTSC) is seeking one or more suitably qualified and/or experienced professionals to:

  • develop a set of dementia-related modules covering behaviour and wellbeing for people with dementia; and/or
  • collate and develop dementia-related content for a tertiary curriculum for health professionals.

The work will be offered on a short-term and/or seconded basis, commencing in November 2008. Applications must be received by Monday 20 October. Please click here for further information and contact details.

Zero Tolerance – recognising and addressing the abuse and neglect of older people

Date: Tuesday 28 October
Time: 1–4 pm

The Zero Tolerance program assists individuals and agencies to meet their legal and moral obligations for notification of abuse of the elderly.

The training program covers:

  • the attitudes and values participants have and the impact of those when considering whether behaviour is abusive;
  • the definitions and context for what constitutes abuse of the elderly;
  • the legislative context in Australia for reporting abuse and neglect including the responsibilities of individuals; and
  • the importance of collaborative practices in responding to the abuse of the elderly.

COAG Communique – Perth meeting

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Perth on 2 October deferred issues relating to aged care until its November meeting.

COAG has issued a Communique which includes information about the Reform of Roles and Responsibilities in Community Mental Health, Aged Care and Disability Services. These reforms will help build seamless service systems to better meet the needs of the aged, people with a disability, people with mental illness and their carers on a national basis.

18th Annual Tri-State Conference call for papers extended only one week left!

The 18th Annual Tri-State Conference: Juggling Priorities in Aged Care will be held 1–3 March at The Albury Convention Centre. This year, the Conference theme looks at the concept of continuous improvement, innovative practice and choice in aged and community care services. We are seeking presentations that demonstrate aspects of aged care that will help lead the industry into the future.

Abstracts for papers have now been extended until close of business Friday 17 October 2008 so don't miss this chance to have your say! They can be mailed, emailed or faxed to:

Last chance to apply for the Postgraduate Community Aged Care Nursing Scholarship Scheme

This Scheme aims to encourage more people to enter (or re-enter) the community aged care sector, and increase the skills of nurses already working in the sector.

Scholarships are available for registered (division 1) nurses with a current practising certificate and a demonstrated history of working in the community aged care sector. Scholarships are not awarded on an academic basis; rather it is hoped that recipients will make a significant contribution to community aged care.

ACSA National Conference - speaker transcripts and presentations available

The National Conference held in Adelaide from 28 September to 1 October provided delegates with excellent, thought-provoking presentations on a variety of topical issues, plus interactive panel sessions and a wide range of social and networking opportunities.

Speaker transcripts available

Those who missed the Conference can hear some of the speakers via the ABC website. Radio National’s Life Matters program interviewed Dr Robyn Stone (workforce issues) and Dr Penny Flett (winner of the ACSA National Individual Award for Excellence). The Perspective program spoke with Dr Kate Barnett (Australian workforce issues), Jean Tinney (finding meaning and being old) and Philip Pearson (assistive technology). Click on the links above to access the transcripts.

South Australia’s Stateline Program featured a story on how Tailem Bend introduced Jack York’s It’s Never Too Late interactive computer program for residential aged care.

ACSA also plans to post available conference papers and presentations on their website by 20 October.

ACSA National Individual Award for Excellence

Dr Penny Flett, CEO at Brightwater Care Group in Western Australia, won the prestigious ACSA National Individual Award for Excellence, for her leadership and innovation in aged care. Since her appointment in 1986, Brightwater has diversified into many service areas including rehabilitation, respite and residential care for younger people as well as running 20 facilities providing residential care.
