Review of conditional adjustment payment for residential aged care – call for submissions

Residential aged care providers are urged to lodge formal submissions to the Review of the Conditional Adjustment Payment (CAP) in residential aged care.

Information about the industry response to the CAP review was emailed to members last month. This document outlined key messages that will be used to argue the industry’s case to maintain the CAP in the short term and ensure Government action on viability issues in the longer term. Click here to access the document.

Submissions will be accepted up until Friday 24 October 2008.  They can be emailed, faxed to (02) 6289 1560 or posted to CAP Review, MDP 76, Department of Health and Ageing, GPO Box 9848, Canberra ACT 2601.

Consumer Directed Care – explore what this means for your organisation

Consumer Directed Care (CDC) is a term heard increasingly often in aged care; it is used broadly to cover a number of models of support. ACS is hosting a CDC Forum on 7 November 2008 to encourage exploration and debate of the concept of CDC with members, to gain a consistent understanding of its scope, to identify the current thinking regarding CDC and to discuss what models are delivered both in Australia and internationally.

The Forum will aim to identify potential policy directions from Governments, explore legislative and legal implications of delivering a CDC model of support and highlight the benefits of CDC from both a consumer and provider perspective. There are many unanswered questions and the CDC Forum will provide the opportunity to identify areas for clarification. This will assist members who choose to pursue CDC as a model of service delivery and those who are considering how best to position themselves if older people choose this model in the future. The Forum and feedback from members will enable ACS to establish a policy position on CDC to represent members’ interests in the future.

The target audience for the Forum is Board members, CEOs and Senior Managers through to Team Leaders. To assist ACS to deliver relevant CDC information, we invite members to forward questions to Peta Braendler. These questions will shape the Forum to make it relevant to members’ needs. After the Forum, where we anticipate additional questions will be raised, ACS will develop a question and answer paper for members’ information.

There are many useful papers available to help gain a better understanding of CDC; please click on the links for ACSA CDC Discussion paper and a CDC paper by Anna Howe.

The Forum program will be available soon. For further information please phone Peta Braendler on 8338 7111 or email.

Reminder: October Deadline for Food Safety Programs for Food Service to Vulnerable Persons

The new standard 3.3.1 – Food Safety Programs for Food Service to Vulnerable Persons was gazetted on 5 October 2006.  The industry was given a two-year transition period to comply.

In South Australia the Department of Health are encouraging all organisations covered by this standard to implement their Food Safety Programs if they haven’t already done so. The Department anticipates organisations will be audited by October 2008.

Please also see ACS training courses for information about the food safety seminar on 13 October.
